About this deal

Sheltering from the rain on the country’s northwest coast Martin describes the weather sculptured rocks they shelter beneath.

Take the Slow Road: Scotland: Inspirational journeys round the Highlands, Lowlands and Islands of Scotland by Camper Van and Motorhome. A great book to slowly read through and enjoy the descriptions of various beautiful regions of Scotland. It also covers the complex subject of ‘camping sauvage’, off-site camping, in a clear and reassuring way.I’d recommend Take the Slow Road: France without hesitation to anyone who owns a camper van, wishes they did or plans to hire one. Dorey takes it slow around our cross-Channel neighbour, finding plenty of scenic spots to park up and put the kettle on, as well as highlighting the top destinations for all kinds of travellers, from climbers and skiers to wine-lovers and walkers. You’ll find details you’re unlikely to find in your average guide book, it’s both practical and fun.

I loved the tips for “newbies to France” including “France has 30,000 roundabouts – you will notice this” and “Napoleon was taller than the average Frenchman at the time. He is the author of The Camper Van Cookbook (2010), The Camper Van Coast (2012), The Camper Van Bible (2016), Take the Slow Road: Scotland (2018) and No. Martin lists the essentials as well as the things that make your trip go even better- no I wouldn’t have thought of taking a universal sink plug for using at camp sites!

The joy of this volume however comes in the latter portion; 26 regionally grouped drives of varied length and geographical character, covering the coasts, rivers and mountains of this varied landscape. Each of these follows a set format; a summary with statistics, a personal travelogue, notes on driving the route, campsites and things to do and see along the way. So if all you want to do is flick through it on a cold day and plan your next outing, you'll be transported (albeit slowly) to pastures, beaches, mountains and highways that make you want to turn the key and go, go, go! And you dont even have to own a camper van or motorhome well tell you the many places you can rent one to take you on the journey.

Full of ideas about what to see, where to park, what to bring - and even where to rent a camper van. The book starts with how to prepare for your French adventure with as Martin says “all the ins and outs, types of places you can stay, stuff to remember and other titbits of information. All of this is interspersed with beautiful photos, handy maps and quirky travel writing from the king of camper vans and motorhomes, Martin Dorey. He’s clearly someone to listen to for motorhome-based wisdom, having presented the BBC2 show One Man and his Camper Van and written several other books on the subject, besides those in this series. Having previously covered England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland by camper van, he now turns his steering wheel towards our neighbour across La Manche. In this book we define the best driving routes around England and Wales for camper vans and motorhomes. Martin takes it easy around France, exploring mountains, coast and everything in between, and the book includes plenty of useful information for route planning, such as maps and information on where to stay, places of interest and things to do, etc.

And it’s a visual feast too with Martin’s photos throughout, tempting you to pack your bags and take to the road. We meander around England and Wales on the most breathtaking roads, chugging up mountain passes and pootling along the coast. Over and above that, this is a great companion for anyone contemplating a road trip to our European neighbours. You’ll be transported (albeit slowly) to, beaches, mountains and highways that make you want to turn the key and go, go, go! It’s absorbing and authoritative, written in a friendly narrative style, full of observations that make it both informative and insightful. We meander around Ireland on the most breathtaking roads, chugging up mountain passes and pootling along the coast. We meander around the highlands, lowlands and islands of Scotland on the most breathtaking roads, chugging up mountain passes and pootling along the coast. We include the steepest, the bendiest, those with the most interesting bridges or views or obstacles, ferries and tidal causeways. Defining the best driving routes around each location, the king of camper vans and motorhomes, Martin Dorey, shows you the coolest places to stay, what to see, what to do and why it’s special.
