About this deal

This story delves into Zoe's adventures where she meets lots of fascinating characters along the way. Other notable award winning books include Floodland, Marcus’ first novel, which won the Branford-Boase Award in 2001, a prize for the best debut novel for children published in the UK each year; My Swordhand is Singing, which won the Booktrust Teenage Prize for 2007, and Lunatics and Luck, part of The Raven Mysteries series, which won a Blue Peter Book Award in 2011. Put this together with the feral survival of the children on the Island of Eels and you have Floodland. Yes, I always loved myths and legends - I used to read and re-read two books from the library - one a big illustrated edition of Greek Myths and the other Old Peter's Russian Tales.

The book has a captivating plot, with interesting characters that I am sure children will enjoy reading. Zoe now has to fend for herself in a settlement which is growing smaller each day, while the people become more savage and desperate. I honestly liked how the climate change way portrait although I probably would have acted differently than the characters.

The main character was a very head strong, independent girl named Zoe who overcame many problems with mostly no adult figures to guide her. Alone and desperate among marauding gangs, she manages to dig a derelict boat out of the mud and gets away to Eels Island. This is stunning debut novel from Marcus Sedgwick and one in which the reader is instantly transported to the watery wastelands of the Fens via strong characterisation and an atmospheric tension that envelops the reader in a sea mist that chills to the bone.

She lives in decaying warehouses on the edge of the waters, foraging for old tinned foods and collecting rainwater to drink. With both your publisher and author hat on, what advice can you give would-be children's authors in getting published? I definitely would not have picked this book up if it weren't for school, because the writing and story just aren't my favorite, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.I found the end to be a bit of an anti-climax after all the drama building in the first ¾ of the book.
