Controllers have followed the annoying trend of exclusive single-software support for over a decade, and it’s good to see software brands working together again. The Pioneer DJ DDJ-FLX6 is a four-channel controller that is compatible with both Rekordbox DJ and Serato DJ Pro. With Serato DJ or VirtualDJ, you can use the Scratch Bank to trigger samples by hitting Performance Pads.

They inherit the best from the professional S-DJX series and Pro Audio speakers, including a front-loaded bass reflex system for a rich, tight bass and DECO* technology for a wider reach and sweet spot. However, this DJ controller introduces a fresh look, with a high-quality dark-gray matte finish and redesigned jog wheels that will make your setup stand out. In addition to the master output there is also a connection for a booth monitor – this is another nod towards the professional kit the unit is modelled on. headphone jacks, meaning no flimsy adapters are required to connect professional headphones to the device. Beyond the basics like play and cue buttons, the DDJ-FLX6 has a decent assortment of deck controls alongside its performance pads.The wheels are impressively sized: they are the same size as the ones you’d find on a CDJ-3000 or Pioneer DDJ-1000.

The FLX6 feels like a cross between the DDJ-1000 and DDJ-400, offering four channels and full-sized jog wheels by forsaking build quality and connectivity options.In addition to the small pitch faders, the performance pads are identical in size and build to those found on entry level Pioneer DJ controllers with a button placed inside the pads. By moving the jog wheel, you can use Jog Cutter to add a scratch effect that sounds professional to the last Hot Cue or playback position.

There are some features found on other controllers (like the DDJ-1000) that won’t be found here, like a track skip button or tension adjustments. There are ten scratch patterns to select and can be switched by moving the play head position displayed on the jog wheels on-jog display. As this controller wouldn’t can’t connect to a professional balanced set up, the booth connection seems a strange decision. There are four channels at play, so ultimately tracks can be played on decks 1 and 2 whilst scratching can be on 3 and 4. Pioneer’s marketing makes it look like the GT model does something the original doesn’t, but that’s not actually true.

Its full-size jog wheels now feature a graphite colour plus a metallic texture on top and a rubberized coating on the outer ring for improved playability. Automating loops, changing BPMs and applying effects in the process, the Merge FX remains active until the DJ presses the central button again to release the effect. VirtualDJ is compatible with the updated unit (licenses available separately), which also offers free use of the rekordbox Core plan and Serato DJ Pro.
